Creating a Flex AIR Annotator app Part 52

In this tutorial well add auto-resizing feature that kicks in if the imported picture is too big.

But when is a picture too big? According to Adobes docs, in Flash Player 10 the maximum amount of pixels in a BitmapData object is 16,777,215 pixels. In Flash Player 11, which is the most recent version right now as I am writing this tutorial, there is no limit for BitmapData objects set by the player. How big the image can be is now determined by the operating system.

We dont know what maximum allowed picture dimensions are on the users computer, but we can assume that everything below 16,777,215 pixels will work. This number of pixels can be represented by a 4097x4095 rectangle (thats the value where both height and width are most close to each other), so we can assume that anything below 4000x4000 pixels will be fine.

So lets declare this limit value in our application:

Go to the newfileWindow TitleWindow object and find the Width and Height NumericSteppers. Bind their maximum values to this sizeLimit variable:

Now lets create a function that will resize the imported pictures according to the limit value.

Call it limitSize, receive an * object as a single parameter. Well be applying the "loader" object from our code to this function, which also does not have a set class, so thats why were using * (any) class.

In the beginning of the function, declare these variables:

The "ratio" value will be calculated and used to maintain proportions when resizing the picture.

The next two variables, "newWidth" and "newHeight", will hold the values of the future height and width for the image. We set it to its current value, though.

Then goes the "scale" variable - this one will be used to store the value that represents how many times bigger was the old image than the new one. Well need it for our Matrix object.

After that we declare "oldWidth" value, which simply holds the current (old) size of the image and doesnt change, well use it to calculate scale.

Next - "matrix", the object needed to resize BitmapData properly.

Finally - "newBD" and "newB" - a BitmapData to hold the new image data, and a Bitmap to return the image.

Then, we have 2 conditionals that go one after another to resize the image, while keeping the proportions. First we check if width is greater than the limit, then we check if height is greater. In both conditionals we first set ratio value, which is the division of the two dimension values, and then we set new width and height values uzing the sizeLimit and ratio values.

Next, we work with these new values to create a new Bitmap object. First we calculate the scale, by dividing newWidth by oldWidth. Then we apply the scale value to the matrix object using matrix.scale(). We create a new BitmapData object with new width and height values, draw the loader (using the matrix) and apply this bitmap data to the newB bitmap. After setting its width and height, we check if scale has changed from 1. If it did, that means the picture has been resized, and we can notify the user of it via an alert message.

Finally we return the Bitmap object.
